Travertine is a natural precipitate of carbonate minerals which is deposited from the water
of mineral springs or streams saturated with calcium carbonate. It can be effectively
polished to a smooth, shiny finish and comes in a variety of colors from
grey to coral-red. It is often beautifully colored and banded as a result of
the presence of iron compounds or organic impurities. While very dense, travertine
scrathes easily and is very reactive to acidic liquids so it will need care
and maintenance similar to marble and limestone. |
