Granite
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Granite is an igneous rock that has a visible crystalline structure and is usually polished to a high gloss finish. Unlike other stone options, granite is so hard and dense that it can be used for almost any purpose. With proper maintenance it is very resistant to staining, etching, fading and burning. Colors, crystal size and structure, and patterns can vary significantly from granite to granite and from slab to slab of the same granite. Due to its classic beauty and durability it is the most desirable countertop surface in today's market.

Marble

Undeniably one of nature's most beautiful stones, marble is a metamorphic type of limestone that is capable of taking a high polish. It comes in a variety of colors, typically pastel shades with darker veining but darker colors are available. Marble is very suitable for bathrooms, fireplaces, flooring and wall cladding. Being more porous and softer than granite, if you are planning to use marble in your kitchen, you will need to take greater care.

Onyx

Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue.) Commonly, specimens of onyx available contain bands of colors of white, tan, and brown. Sardonyx is a variant in which the colored bands are sard (shades of red) rather than black. Pure black Onyx is common, and perhaps the most famous variety, but not as common as Onyx with banded colors.

Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite. As a non-crystalline stone, limestone possesses very uniform composition, texture, and structure, and will not take on a polish. Limestone ranges in color from white to gray to light gold. Limestone is widely used in bathrooms and for flooring. Being more porous and softer than granite, if you are planning to use limestone in your kitchen, you will need to take greater care.

Travertine
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Travertine is a natural precipitate of carbonate minerals which is deposited from the water of mineral springs or streams saturated with calcium carbonate. It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish and comes in a variety of colors from grey to coral-red. It is often beautifully colored and banded as a result of the presence of iron compounds or organic impurities. While very dense, travertine scrathes easily and is very reactive to acidic liquids so it will need care and maintenance similar to marble and limestone.

Slate

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock derived from a shale-type sedimentary rock. Slate is fine-grained, relative to granite, and also much more uniform in composition and will not take on a high polish. This makes slate very durable and resistant to heat, staining and chemical etching from acidic foods. It also means that slate is lower maintenance than all but granite. Slate colors are mostly dark with greys and greens most common.
